A general idea of taking care of someone as a nurse is helping and healing those who are ill. In addition to being compassionate towards others to provide appropriate treatment. Dorothy Orem’s model focuses on patients’ deliberate actions to meet their own and dependent others’ therapeutic self-care demands. Orem’s model supports nursing through the models of self-care, self-care deficit and theory of nursing systems. Orem (1959) states that nursing is required in self-care deficit because of the inability to perform self-care as the result of limitations. The theory of self-care is described as maturing or mature adults deliberately learn and perform actions to direct their survival, quality of life and well-being. Orem then explains with the product of nursing systems, nurses use the nursing process to help individuals meet their self-care requisites and build their self-care or dependent-care capabilities.

The nurse should encourage the patient to participate in their self-care in order to function and improve their health. For example, a patient with an ostomy should be educated about ostomy care and be guided to perform their own care. This helps the patient deal with the change of their body as well improve outcomes. Both self-care and self-care agency are important contributors to maintain well-being on an individual. Orem’s theory is a helpful model for nurses and highly used in clinical settings. This theory helps improve patient’s health conditions by making them independent with their care.
