Nursing Metaparadigm

The four main tenets of nursing metaparadigms include person, health, environment, and nursing. The person tenet of the nursing paradigm is concerned with the person receiving nursing care, the patient, the family members, and other persons considered important to the patient. The patient’s health outcomes are attributable to their relationships with their social connections (Parker & Smith, 2016). The environment tenet focuses on the patient’s surrounding, which has internal and external influences that continuously affect the person interacting with their environment. Health is another tenet in nursing metaparadigm that is in constant motion, and includes the person’s emotional, spiritual, social, and intellectual wellbeing, which should be integrated into healthcare (George, 2016). Lastly, the nursing tenet refers to the delivery of positive patient health outcomes by providing a safe environment. The nurse applies their professional knowledge and skills while collaborating with other healthcare professionals in achieving the best patient health outcomes.Nursing Meta-paradigm Essay Paper

My personal nursing philosophy is to provide holistic care to patients, including emotional and social support, which some nurses omit in their service provision. As an empathetic individual, I like to ensure that my patients feel valued and cared for, even if the nurse provides them with nursing care, which is a paid service. I value a patient’s holistic health, where I ensure that they feel that the nurse is a personal friend. I would like to extend the social and emotional support to my patients, because that is what I would like if I were a patient. I believe that everyone needs love and affection, and as a nurse, I strive to provide my patients with the additional support they need, because it helps to improve their health outcomes. For instance, a patient did not receive visitors during the visiting hours, and they looked emotionally affected by this reality. I went and sat with the patient, engaged them in conversation about their social life, and left them feeling uplifted. I think that such emotional support is critical to the wellbeing of a patient, which is why I incorporated it in my nursing philosophy.Nursing Meta-paradigm Essay Paper

Over time, I would gradually change my personal philosophy in nursing by including culturally sensitive nursing practice. I believe that I will encounter patients from various cultural backgrounds. Cultures differ widely in their practices and beliefs, some which affect patient health. Therefore, as a nurse, I plan to first develop cultural competence, then, practice culturally sensitive nursing. This approach in nursing is important for my philosophy because it would help me achieve positive health outcomes with my patients because I can relate with them, and offer nursing services in tandem with their cultural beliefs, or those which challenge their cultural beliefs. For instance, I would seek to understand how different communities feed, to determine their physical health status.

The change in this personal philosophy was inspired by an incident where I was unable to properly identify a cultural practice as the primary problem to a patient’s recurring problem. A patient kept visiting the hospital each month, with typhoid symptoms. Upon treating the illness, the patient would recuperate then return the following month with the same healthcare condition. Upon investigation, I established that the patient engaged in a cultural practice, that entailed drinking raw animal blood, as part of a traditional ritual in their community. Therefore, the primary cause of the healthcare problem was the traditional practice of drinking blood, which adversely affected the patient’s health.Nursing Meta-paradigm Essay Paper
