Assessment Item 3: Take Home Exam Weight: 50% of overall mark

Submission: Midnight, Friday 6th November 2015, through Turnitin. No paper submission is required.

Instructions:
Using your knowledge gained from lectures, tutorial activities, online activities, assessments and readings, the following assessment asks you to work through the outlined activities and submit this as a word document into Turnitin.

As part of this assessment, you will provide evidence of your learning in creating appropriate research questions, extracting data, appraising the quality of research using validated tools and communicating the meaning of this data. You understanding of research approaches and other subject content will also be tested. Where applicable, word requirements have been noted. If you refer to documents authored by others, it is appropriate that you should acknowledge their work with referencing.

The exam has 50 marks.

The exam is set out in three parts:

• PART ONE: Development of research question and search (12 marks)

• PART TWO: Appraisal of qualitative research articles (18 marks)

• PART THREE: General content questions (20 marks)

This is an exam, so you will need to find the information and work out the issues without asking for help from your tutors.

You will only be tested on content discussed in lectures, online activities, readings or tutorials.

You can contact your subject coordinator if you have unforseen and exceptional issues, however assumed knowledge will not be clarified.

PART ONE: DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH QUESTION AND SEARCH (12 marks)
One of the underlying concepts explored through this subject was in refining broad clinical questions into researchable questions and using these refined terms to extract data.

Previously we have given you the case studies. In this assessment we want you to take this further and decide on a topic yourself.

Specifically, we would like you to ask a qualitative research question on a clinical topic that you are interested in.

You will then need to refine your topic of interest into a single researchable question, provide a search strategy and provide a screenshot of how you implemented this strategy into a database of your choice. Finally, you will be asked to provide the abstract of the qualitative article you have found on your chosen topic.

1. Please describe the clinical topic in which you are interested and why this is particular interest to you (2 marks):

The PICO format is most applicable for quantitative research approaches; however, it is useful in planning a systematic search of literature for any research question.

2. Determine the PICO terms from your larger topic that might assist you in developing your specific qualitative researchable question (2 marks):

Population

Interest

Comparison (if appropriate)

Outcome (if applicable)

3. Why is it important to have short and specific terms in your PICO instead of long descriptive sentences? (1 marks)

4. Create your PICO format qualitative question (Eg: In individuals with ……, what is their experience of …… (P….I…. C…. O….)) (1.5 marks)

5. Please fill in the search strategy, including standard Boolean operators, that you would use in any chosen database (3.5 marks)
