The Movement for Evidence-based Practice

In everything that we do as providers, any decisions regarding patient treatment and care should be supported by evidence. Since the beginning of the nursing profession, practice guidelines were changed when new evidence suggesting better outcomes. It was Dr. Cochrane who started the movement for evidence-based practice (EBP) and was the advocate of using the evidence from randomized controlled trials study, which is considered the strongest evidence (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015).

Thus, as providers we are encouraged to adopt EBPs in our practice. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss one example of an EBP and its benefits. Evidence Base Practice Example Poor pain management can be debilitating to patients, especially the elderly who may be suffering from varying degrees of pain due to surgery, neuropathic pain, or osteoarthritis. There are many treatments for pain and ranges from simple topical creams to surgical procedures. Aside from the traditional pain medications to relieve pain, more providers have prescribed the use of topical analgesics for pain management. The goal for pain management, whether osteoarthritis or not, are to control the pain and physical dysfunction (Deng et al., 2017).The Movement for Evidence-based Practice
