Scenario r/t peer post:

Sensory impairment may affect an individual’s ability to meet their needs on Maslow’s hierarchy. An accidental injury may lead a patient to hospitalization and disrupt their usual life style.  Consider a person involved in a motor vehicle accident, suffering multiple trauma and being hospitalized at an acute care facility.  If this person had a hearing impairment, communication with the patient could be a challenge for the patient and the RN.

  • Identify one additional patient need, in addition to communication which is impacted by the hearing impairment.
  • Identify at least one (1) appropriate nursing intervention for each of the two needs related to the hearing impairment.
  • Give a supportive rationale, explaining why the chosen interventions will help.

Peer post:

Hearing loss is a common health issue. Conditions that contribute to hearing loss are age, illness and genetics. “Hearing impairment can trigger changes in attitude, the ability to communicate, the awareness of surroundings, and even the ability to protect oneself thus affecting a person’s quality of life” (Hinkle, 2017). People with hearing impairments also feel a sense of insecurity this is due to lack of confidence and fears of making mistakes. Therefore, hearing screening and treatment is necessary.

Sensory impairment may affect an individual ability to meet their needs on Maslow’s hierarchy. Communication and self-esteem are two needs that has an impact on the patient in the scenario’s hearing impairment. Social needs on Maslow’s hierarchy which is love, acceptance and belonging is a form of interpersonal communication. The esteem stage of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs refers to the need for respect, self-esteem and self-confidence or the desire to be valued and accepted by others.

Interventions and rationales that are appropriate for communication and self-esteem needs due to the patients hearing impairment are to make sure that you have the patient attention by facing the patient. Use simple words and short sentences while keeping hands and objects away from your mouth. Then encourage feedback. This facilitates understanding and reduces anxiety. Also, provide the patient with resources and social support networks that are available. This helps to build the patients self-esteem and social functioning.
