RE: Discussion – Week 3

One area I believe should be on the organization’s systematic agenda is the current cases of nurse burnout. This facility has had issues with nurse burnout for the better part of the last year because of strained resources caused by the current covid-19 pandemic. A study was actually conducted to confirm this issue. The Leader Empowering Behaviors Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were used to evaluate this issue and the results indicated high Emotional Exhaustion (EE) and Depersonalization (DP). The scores for the Personal Accomplishment (PA) criteria were moderate

Nurse burnout is often characterized by emotional exhaustion, lack of motivation and feelings of frustration that might eventually affect one’s ability to provide quality care (Mudallal, Othman & Al Hassan, 2017). This clinical issue has had a negating impact on job satisfaction, the quality of primary care and patient satisfaction and experiences. Nurses with compassion fatigue, for instance, are disengaged from their patients. Ideally, nurse-patient relationships are important for the treatment and recovery process. Also, nurse burnout leads to high turnover rates (Kelly, Gee & Butler, 2021). This leads to loss of talent and a further strain on the remaining scarce resources (Mudallal, Othman & Al Hassan, 2017). This triggers a vicious cycle of burnout. The loss of reputational capital by the organization is also another key issue that underlines the critical nature of managing this problem.

Stakeholders are individuals and entities that are directly affected by a specific issue. The stakeholders in this clinical issue would be nurses, and nursing leadership and the top management of the organization. Patients and the community at large also complete the stakeholder list. Nurses and patients would be considered the primary stakeholders because they are directly affected by these incidences of nurse burnout. Nurse leaders, department leaders, the top management and even the professionals involved in interprofessional collaboration with nurses form part of the secondary stakeholders. These stakeholders would be interested in implementing change to mitigate burnout prevalence because it would allow the individuals and the organization by extension to meet their goals and objectives.

A key aspect of the policy process is agenda setting. How do topics get on that agenda? Agenda setting requires the support of stakeholders to move the issue forward. In this week’s media presentation, Dr. Kathleen White outlines the policy process and discusses how to move issues into the policy arena through agenda setting. The ultimate goal is to gain the attention of leadership whether at the organizational, local, state, national, or international level.
