Speaking of the benefits of hormone therapy, one might point out that it can be particularly effective while relieving symptoms of menopause which improves the quality of life of a person. This may be the major reason why the patients agree to have it. After all, the negative symptoms of menopause are why they started looking for the treatment in the first place. The next important benefit that should be mentioned in particular is that hormone therapy is known to prevent bone loss. Nevertheless, there are some risks that should be considered as well. For example, the risks of endometrial cancer can be quite high. The possibility of this outcome is increased if a woman has a uterus and does not take progesterone together with estrogen. In addition to that, there is also an increased possibility of blood clots due to changes in blood chemistry as the therapy influences the body.

As one can easily see, there are both benefits and risks. Nevertheless, Bandeira and Gharib (2014) insist that the benefits are tangible while the risks are somewhat abstract. They write: “one should anlyze the risks and benefits before suggesting this therapy” (Badeira and Gharib, 2014). Speaking of alternatives, one might suggest that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may appear to be quite effective in this case. This alternative is based on evidence that women who treated depression with this class of medication were reported to have fewer symptoms of menopause.
