Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative and the IOM Report

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is a public health philanthropy that strives to promote organizations and individuals into living a healthy life, through its grants and grants programs. The organization focuses on discovering new ideas, building a culture of health, and providing grants for research, evaluation, and learning, to healthcare institutions, among other entities that seek to promote healthy living. In 2008, the RWJF approached the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and proposed a partnership that sought to assess and transform the nursing profession. The nursing profession faced significant drawbacks in fulfilling reformations in the healthcare system. Therefore, the IOM and the RWJF formed a two-year partnership on an initiative dubbed the Future of Nursing. IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing Essay

This purpose of this initiative was to report on the recommendations for action-oriented blueprints for the future of nursing and changes that should be made in institutional policies at local, state, and national levels. The RWJF therefore committed to facilitate the implementation phase of these recommendations, through its philanthropic programs. Therefore, through its grant programs and philanthropic activities, the RWJF work led to the initiative with the IOM.

IOM Report Recommendations and their Impact

The four key recommendations by the IOM are as follows:

  • Nurses should professionally practice to the full extent of their nursing education and training.
  • Nurses should undergo higher education levels through enhanced education system.
  • Nurses should partner with physicians in redesigning the healthcare system in the United States.
  • Data collection and better information infrastructure are important in planning for an effective workforce.

These recommendations, implemented through the funding by RWJF, brought about positive developments in nursing practice, development, training and education. For instance, one of the initiatives under the Future of Nursing program that RWJF funded more than 592 million dollars was the Campaign for Action, an action coalition that began in Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, California, and Michigan to bring stakeholders to implement the recommendations by IOM. One of the impacts of this campaign was to enhance nursing education, by facilitating the elimination of regulatory barriers that limited the nurses’ ability to practice to the full extent of their training(Hassmiller, 2013). For instance, in Washington, Idaho, and Texas, the state governments standardized the nursing classes to enable seamless advancement for the nurses seeking to advance their education level. Enabling nurses to advance their education enhances nursing practice because of additional professional knowledge and skills. In Indiana and Rhode Island, the state governments introduced inter-professional collaboration as a subject in nursing schools, which trains nurses on how to collaborate with other colleagues in a healthcare setting, hence, enhancing their professionalism and patient outcomes(Hassmiller, 2013).  In Montana, the action coalitions strategized on placing nurses in the board of directors in health institutions to support nurse leadership. These actions have enhanced nursing in terms of their educational level, leadership opportunities, and nursing practice through increased inter-professional collaboration.
