Asthma: Healthy People 2020 Global Health Initiative

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory pulmonary disease that obstructs the air paths to the lungs, making it difficult or in serious attacks, almost impossible to breathe. Asthma is primarily caused by environmental factors, allergens, as well as viral infections. Symptoms may include tightening of the chest, sudden breathlessness, wheezing, coughs, and chest pains (Etats-Unis, Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention & National Center for Health Statistics, 2012).  Asthma is recognized as one of the leading respiratory disorders under the Healthy People 2020 Topic Areas: Respiratory Diseases and Sleep Health.
