Pharmacotherapeutics Assignment Guidelines
PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is for the student to effectively evaluate the pharmacotherapeutics of an adult.
This assignment will allow the student to practice nursing skills including patient history nursing implications
and patient education.
COURSE OUTCOMES
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO 1 Apply the concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamicsto the use of specific pharmacologic
agent categoriesin terms of mechanism of action therapeutic effects side/adverse effects nursing
implications and patient education. (POs 1 2 3)
CO 2 Integrate pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics within a pharmacologic category for the purpose
of identifying prototype agents mechanisms of action indications contraindications and side effects
of drugs used to treat a specific health condition and its underlying pathophysiology. (POs 1 2 8)
CO 3 Apply principles of health promotion disease and injury prevention through the use of
commonly used pharmacologic therapy across the lifespan taking into consideration cultural
genetic and gender implications. (POs 3 8)
CO 4 Utilize the nursing process in understanding the effects of drug therapy on patient outcomes across
the lifespan within the framework of a diverse population of patients individuals groups and
communities. (PO 4)
CO 5 Describe the many roles of the professional nurse including educator researcher and advocate in
relation to pharmacologic therapy and within the framework of a diverse population of patients

REQUIREMENTS
1. Select an adult person to use as your subject for this assignment. Make sure that the person is on at least
five (5) or more medications. You will want to consider any as needed (prn) medicationsthat the person may
have prescribed including over-the-counter medications and complementary alternative medicine.
2. Complete the following table regarding the five chosen medications.

3. Gather relevant personal and medical history information from the person.
4. Provide three (3) nursing diagnosesfor the person.
5. Describe any specific personal history information that could affect medication administration (age
gender ethnicity culture genetics health beliefs allergies use of alternative therapies/herbal
supplements etc.). Provide supporting literature for your analysis.
6. Nursing Implications: Discuss your role as a professional nurse in relation to the medications if you
were the persons nursing care provider. Be sure to discuss the following.
Nursing management
Patient education related to
o assessment;
o drug therapy administration (pharmacokinetics);
o prevention and management of complications(e.g. drug-drug interaction missed dose);
o signs and symptoms of adverse effects/complications; and
o nutrition lifestyle choices and habits.
7. Develop a concept map or poster based on the requirements above.
