Review the agenda priorities of the current/sitting U.S. president and the two previous presidential administrations.

Select an issue related to healthcare that was addressed by each of the last three U.S. presidential administrations.

Reflect on the focus of their respective agendas, including the allocation of financial resources for addressing the healthcare issue you selected.

Identify the Population Health concern you selected. Opioid Addiction
Describe the Population Health concern you selected and the factors that contribute to it. The opioid epidemic is the health concern that I have selected because it affects families across all socioeconomic statuses. As nurses, we assess pain just as often as we take vital signs of our patients. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are in place to bring forth comfort. However, pain management becomes challenging with the rise in chronic medical conditions and it is very easy to become dependent on narcotics. Drug dependency is a growing problem in the United States.

Increase awareness and education to reduce stigma and curb addiction. Provide communities with the resources to tackle the epidemic. Foster meaningful partnerships with organizations for sustained involvement.
Identify the allocations of financial and other resources that the current and two previous presidents dedicated to this issue. The administration secured $6 billion in funding to support, prevent, and provide recovery activities. Funds allocated established help centers and institutions for individuals affected.

The administration allocated $1.1 billion for individuals wanting treatment so that they can get it anywhere. The administration allocated $12.2 billion in anti-drug efforts involving prevention, drug treatment, and enforcement.

Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue. The Trump administration works hard to keep dangerous drugs out of the United States.

They also want to prosecute negligent practitioners and strengthen criminal penalties. Available to people struggling are resources to aid in recovery.

Clinicians will need to check a PDMP before prescribing an opioid. This will help to identify opioid use disorder as previously prescribed narcotics will be listed.

The administration will also allocate funds for evidence-based research to improve knowledge gaps in proper identification and treatment.

National prescription drug take back day also provides safe and effective ways of disposing of opioids.

The Clinton foundation partnered with Kaléo and Adapt Pharm to lower the cost of Narcan, an opioid effect reversing agent.

Community faith leaders were equipped with the resources and tools to serve the community as trusted leaders.

Partnership with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg and Public Health as well as Harvard Medical School used evidence-based research to implement interventions and education.

You must proofread your paper. This represented the first major piece of U.S. healthcare legislation, and the topic of healthcare has been woven into presidential agendas and political debate ever since.

As a healthcare professional, you may be called upon to provide expertise, guidance and/or opinions on healthcare matters as they are debated for inclusion into new policy. You may also be involved in planning new organizational policy and responses to changes in legislation. For all of these reasons you should be prepared to speak to national healthcare issues making the news.

Where does Families USA get its funding? ProPublica reports that Families USA’s 2014 990 tax return showed revenues of $7 million . Donors include the Kellogg Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and others. As you can see, learning about Ron Pollock, finding the 990s, and discover­ ing which causes the Kellogg Foundation and other donors usually support takes some digging.

Summing it up, you shou ld never assume tha t any reference or source is un­ biased. Do not take content as factual until you have determined what the agenda and motivations of the au thors or publishers may be. This kind of critical thinking requires you to be a skeptical, soph is ticated user of data and information. This is not to say that you cannot use references from organizations such as Heritage Foundation or Fami lies USA; however, seeking balance in your understanding is important. Balance your knowledge by reading and exploring a variety of points of view. As a starting point, TABLE 12-1 describes the five major political parties (and their general ideology) in the United States.
