Based on past literature, it is essential to note that nursing theories have continuously placed the patient at the center of care, guaranteeing holistic care. The Jean Watson theory of caring is one such theory that has espoused the use of caring, which is needed for the humanistic face of the nursing profession. Therefore, in this discussion, the component in the metaparadigm of nursing highlighted is the environment. In that regard, some of the concepts in Watson’s theory of caring based on the criteria developed in the metaparadigm of nursing include; co-creating a supportive environment and assisting with the gratification of human needs (Watson, 2022).

Moreover, the metaparadigm of nursing has person, health, environment, and nursing as the four main concepts (Nikfarid et al., 2018). Human caring theories are essential because they focus on all aspects of the patients rather than the patient aspect.

In the first concept selected in Watson’s theory of caring, co-creating a supportive environment entails the adoption of the Jean Watson Caritas processes that include showing kindness, authentic presence, spirituality, and the nursing professional being the environment to promote the overall healing of the patient (Norman et al., 2016).

In the second concept assisting with the gratification of human needs, the nursing profession can play a pivotal role in recognizing the orders of needs, for instance, food, ventilation, and elimination, before advancing to other needs such as psychosocial and psychophysical needs (Watson, 2022).. Meeting these needs can allow for the gratification of both emotional and physical needs. Metaparadigm of nursing concepts shows that environment is critical to the healing process, which is a primary emphasis in Watsons’ theory. Therefore, as indicated in the two concepts selected, the internal and external factors can help patients actualize their inner healing power.

The concept of people in the metaparadigm of nursing refers to the people receiving the nursing care. Each person is unique and multidimensional. Watson’s interpretation of the Person component promotes the practice of satisfying human needs through nursing/patient human care. Watson believed that patients should be valued as individual persons, be respected, nurtured, and understood with the right to make informed choices regarding their health (Nikfarid & Hekmat, 2018). She also believed that for a person to be fully healed, a holistic approach focusing on the mind, body, and soul is necessary. Each individual has to be valued and understood, with the nurse being always present and with the patient’s dignity always remaining protected and intact (Nikfarid & Hekmat, 2018).

An example is when a healthcare provider is caring for a patient. As the healthcare provider develops the appropriate plan of care for the patient they should listen to the patient’s needs, communicate in a manner they can understand, and then develop the plan of care catered to their needs. By empathizing and providing a caring attitude the nurse can connect with every patient on a higher level. Identifying the person that is being cared for and connecting with them is the first step toward healing in any aspect whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual (Nikfarid & Hekmat, 2018).
