Communications can be hindered by the lack of standard terminologies throughout the health care system. The American Nurses Association (ANA) recognizes 12 standardized (including nursing-specific and interdisciplinary) terminologies as well as data element sets (such as the nursing minimum data set), and interfaces to support nursing practice.

DIRECTIONS

Compare and contrast two ANA recognized standard nursing terminologies (selected from any of the Interface Terminologies, Minimum Data Sets or Reference Terminology) and explain fully. Discuss why there is a need for codification of nursing data in electronic health records (EHRs). Include the basic concepts of the terminologies you selected and apply these to one case example. You can provide an example from your practice or the literature to demonstrate your understanding of the material and to bring the material to life.

• Use APA formatting guidelines.
• Correctly and accurately cite references (there is no required number of references).
• Be posted by designated deadline.
