CBT versus REBT

Psychotherapy involves applying a structured approach to address issues with mental implications. It engages the services of a qualified and trained psychotherapist who mediates the therapy interactions through the use of scientifically validated approaches. Its objective to help clients develop healthier habits that allow for happier, healthier and productive lives (Sadock, B., Sadock, V. & Ruiz, 2014). The present paper explores the similarities and differences between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) as unique psychotherapy approaches. Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory Essay

Briefly describe how CBT and REBT are similar.

There are three similarities between CBT and REBT. The first similarity is that the two approach rely on theoretical perspectives to guide practice. The theoretical perspectives guide therapists on what to do and how to interpret each situation. The second similarity is that they both address negative emotions such as inappropriate guilt and anger. The third similarity is that they both involve the therapist and client working in concert to identify the problem and present a solution (Cautin & Lilienfeld, 2015).

Explain at least three differences between CBT and REBT. Include how these differences might impact your practice as a mental health counselor.

There are four differences between CBT and REBT. The first difference is at the philosophical level with CBT focusing on negative emotions only while REBT focuses on emotional disturbance and negative emotions. The second difference is how much importance they attach to secondary disturbance. CBT ignores secondary disturbance as being of no concern while REBT considers secondary disturbance as being of primary importance. The third difference is how they approach negative and positive qualities. CBT reinforces positive qualities and discards negative qualities, while REBT advocates for all qualifies to be unconditionally accepted. The fourth difference is how they view negative emotions. CBT views negative emotions as inappropriate and unhelpful while REBT views negative emotions as both helpful and unhelpful (Wheeler, 2014) Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory Essay.

Explain which version of CBT you might use with clients and why.

The most appropriate version of CBT to be used with clients suffering from depression is Beck’s Cognitive Therapy. This version focuses on helping clients to identify and recognize how their thoughts are linked to the depression. It takes clients through the process of growth so that they are able to understand the sources of their core beliefs that engendered the depression. The core beliefs are understood to be the salient and dominant thought processes that guide decision-making Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory Essay. It particularly notes that clients will typically revered to their core beliefs when faced with traumatic events. The assumption is that the clients will apply a logical thought process when faced with normal events. By reverting to unfavorable core beliefs, the clients become susceptible to feelings of depression. In applying this version of CBT, the therapist has an opportunity to guide the client in developing the appropriate cognitive and behavioral skills that help with modifying core beliefs and managing emotions. In addition, this version is delivered in few sessions (8 to 16 sessions) thus achieving positive results speedily (Cautin & Lilienfeld, 2015).

Summary

One must accept that psychotherapy involves the use of different approaches to address issues with mental implications, with the intervention mediated by a qualified therapist. In addition, one must acknowledge that CBT and REBT are two psychotherapy approaches with similarities and difference. Overall, there is a need to recognize that the unique peculiarities of CBT and REBT make each one suitable for different cases. Also, of the dffierent versions of CBT, Beck’s Cognitive Therapy would be suitable for addressing depression since it focuses on changing thought processes and uses few sessions: between 8 and 16 sessions.
