Residential Care Home Assessment Essay
Home safety and independence/dependence are very important to assess in a patient in order to best understand his or her health condition. In this particular case, I have assessed a geriatric patient on these two subjects and have done so using the Katz ADL instrument as well as the Home Safety Checklist. This patient is a nursing home resident, and functional and safety assessments have been made on him.Residential Care Home Assessment Essay
Looking at the functional aspect of the client, the Katz ADL instrument takes six activities of daily living into consideration and ranks them on a scale of 0 – 1 (0 being dependent and 1 being independent). These activities range from bathing to feeding. The points are added up after assessing each category and that is put on a scale between 0 – 6. A score of 0 shows a very dependent patient with relation to ADL’s. A score if 6 would signify a patient who is very independent with ADL’s. When applied to my patient, he earned a score of 1. This shows that my patient is toward the extreme state of very dependent. The second assessment I took for my patient was the National Safety Council Home Safety Checklist. This checklist runs through different hazards and precautions that should be assessed both inside and outside of the home. There are some questions on this particular checklist that are not applicable to a nursing home, but most of the questions are fair in assessing the safety of the client. After assessing Roselane Nursing Home using this checklist, it is safe to say that a safe environment is provided for with each patient. Some points do not necessarily apply, like points about swimming pools and garage doors, but for those that do apply, each checks out. These things that check out include handrails provided for steps, mats and foot grips near bathtubs and showers, salt used on icy driveways and sidewalks, and others.Residential Care Home Assessment Essay
In conclusion, with the help of the Katz ADL instrument, and the Home Safety Checklist, a fair assessment of the patient with regards to these things is able to be recorded. My particular patient has a Katz score of 1 that shows he is very dependent which may help call attention to supervision, direction, and/or personal assistance. Also, the patient’s nursing home checked out well on all applicable points in the Home Safety Checklist. These tools show to be very helpful in giving a accurate assessment of where the patient stands with regard to his/her functional and safety status.Residential Care Home Assessment Essay
