Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Overview/Description:

The purpose of this assignment is to describe, evaluate and discuss application of a nursing grand or mid-range theory. This assignment also provides the learner an opportunity to connect theory and research to nursing phenomena. Learners will develop an 8-10 page paper (excluding the title page and references) using APA style to address the elements listed below.Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Theory/Author Name and Background

Select a Grand or Mid-Range Theory that is appropriate to your practice setting.

Describe the theorist’s background in detail and discuss how their experiences have impacted the theory development.

Examine crucial references for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authors writing about the selected theory.

Identify the phenomenon of concern or problems addressed by the theory.

Theory Description

Explain whether the theory uses deductive, inductive or retroductive reasoning. Provide evidence to support your conclusion.

Describe the major concepts of the theory. How are they defined? (theoretically and/or operationally) Is the author consistent in the use of the concepts and other terms in the theory?Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Interpret how the concepts are defined. Implicitly or explicitly?

Examine the relationships (propositions) among the major concepts.

Evaluation

Identify explicit and implicit assumptions (values/beliefs) underlying the theory. On what assumptions does the theory build?

Examine if the theory has a description of the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm. If so, how are they explained in the theory? If the metapardigm is not explained, what elements do you see as relevant to the theory and why?

Discuss the clarity of the theory. Did it have lucidness and consistency?

Application

Examine how the theory would guide nursing actions.

Describe specifically how you can use this theory in your area of nursing (Practice, Education, Informatics or Administration).Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Nursing theory guides nurses and gives them a framework that supports independence and autonomy in nursing. Prior to the advent of nursing theory, nurses were considered to be assistants to the physician. Nursing theory guides nurses to follow their own professional parameters not just those of medicine. Theories define and clarify nursing and the purpose of nursing practice to distinguish it from other caring professions by setting professional boundaries (McEwen & Wills, 2011).Nursing Theory Analysis Paper
Importance of nursing theory
The nursing profession bases itself on the numerous theories that guide the practice of nursing. Theory is argued to be important in the establishment of the unique body of knowledge essential for nursing to be recognized as a profession and as a means of improving patient care (Kenny, 2002). These sets of concepts make assumptions about behavior, health problems, patient population and environment that are logical and consistent with every day observations and supported by past research in the same or related areas (“Application of Theory in Nursing Process”, 2011).
This author works in a facility that embraces the Jean Watson theory of caring. There is a Caritas committee that is overseeing the creation of Caritas rooms on all units where possible. The theory of nurses taking care of themselves as well as the care of their patients is highly regarded in the facility.
In this paper another important theory will be examined, which is the theory of comfort. The reason this theory was selected is that this author works in the highly competitive field of same day surgery. Area Surgi centers are the competition.Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Nursing theory and research are integral aspects to improving and promoting nursing practice. These theories exist as grand theories and middle-range theories. While grand theories tend to involve broader or abstract thinking, middle-range theories are developed from grand theories but are seen as less abstract and narrow making them more applicable to clinical practice (Butts, 2015). An example of a middle-range theory that demonstrates clinical pertinence is Nola Pender’s Health Promotion model. This model, along with its theorist and clinical application will be analyzed and presented.

Theory

The Health Promotion model or theory is a middle-range theory developed by Nola Pender in 1975 and was first released in 1982 (Butts, 2015). The theory is classified as a middle-range theory making it clinically applicable and beneficial for research. The model serves to assist nursing with the knowledge of assessing patients holistically including, behaviors and beliefs to assist them in altering their lifestyle behaviors to improve their health (Petiprin, 2016). The theory consists of three categories for implementing health promotion. These categories include, individual characteristics or experiences, behavior cognitions with affect and finally behavioral outcomes (Kamran, Azadbakht, Sharifirad, Mahaki & Mohebi, 2015). With these categories in mind, it is essential for nursing to be proactive in providing care for individuals. By implementing this Health Promotion model, nursing is equipped to assess the patient in a holistic manner with an understanding of what the patient knows, believes and how they feel. With this complete understanding, nursing can provide patients education Nursing Theory Analysis Paper
