Think of a particular day you spent working in a health care environment, and consider three or four distinct points in time. For each point of time, consider the following: With whom did you interact? Which forms of communication did you use? What issues were communicated about—did they seem to be light-hearted or sensitive? Straightforward or complicated? How would you describe the pace of the interactions and your work?
As you consider these questions, it becomes clear that communication can be quite complex, with many layers of meaning that shape the experience for everyone involved. How could this awareness help you to understand instances of ineffective communication when they arise?

It is my experience that communication can either be effective or ineffective such that ineffective communication turns out to be frustrating. That is all dependent on how the message has been coded and decoded. In this case, correct coding and decoding to preserve the original message and framework presents effective communication as a consequence (Catalano, 2015). In fact, ineffective communication is resultant from variances in the understanding, context, expectations and framework that impede the coding and decoding to alter the message and make certain that both the receiver and sender have conflicting understandings of what the communication envisioned (Allen & Spitzer, 2015; Harris, 2015). My most memorable experience with ineffective communication occurred during my teenage years. Prior to taking my driving test and applying for the license, I had received a promise from my father that he would take me out in order to hone my driving skills. We agreed that every evening he would allow me to drive his car in the rarely used public back roads under his supervision. He did not keep his promise and I ended up failing the test and was not issued with a driving license. On informing him about the test outcome, he appeared sympathetic and calm, informing me that there would be other tests in the future. I reacted badly to the whole situation and accused him of not caring about my happiness and never having time to help me out. He in turn told me that his decision not to take me out driving was borne of love and a need to keep me safe, thus making him sabotage my intention to acquire a driving license. One strategy that could have been applied to promote a better outcome would entail having a better grasp of non-verbal cues. These cues consist of conveying messages to express non-vocalized opinions and ideas. In fact, these cues comprise objects, pictures, symbols, signs, contact and touch, tone of voice, gestures, facial expression, and body language. As such, the possibility of effective communication can be improved by understanding non-verbal cues (Guffey & Loewy, 2015).
One must understand that ineffective communication as well as the associated frustration is all about the disconnect between reality and expectation. As long as the reality meets or even exceeds the expectations, then the experience can be considered as satisfactory and non-frustrating. On the other hand, should be reality fall short of expectations, then the experience would be considered frustrating. In addition, one must acknowledge that frustration is all about personal subjectivity such that each individual would have a different interpretation of a communication as either being frustrating or not. In the present case, it is evident that my interpretation of frustration linked to communication is all about understanding what is being communicated.
