NSG 502: Guidelines for Critique of Qualitative Research on Hand wahing
1. Use the following guidelines to critique the research article provided. There is a distinct difference between critiquing and reporting. Make sure you critique.
2. Refer to Chapter 18 for specific critiquing questions.
3. Prepare your paper using APA format 6th edition.
4. No abstract is required.
5. Page length should be no more than 4 pages, excluding title and reference pages.
6. This is a formal paper. Follow closely the writing rubric posted in the Table of Contents section of the course.

Does the title represent the study?
Abstract (3 points)
Does the abstract summarize the main points of the article?
INTRODUCTION
Statement of the Problem (5 points)
What is the phenomenon of interest? Is it explained? Significance to nursing?
Purpose (3 points)
Clearly stated? Addresses population, connected to identified problem?
Literature Review (4 points)
Is the current knowledge base clearly expressed, including what is known and not known? Is the purpose for reviewing the literature identified?
Conceptual/Theoretical framework (5 points)
Is the framework explicit of implicit? Developing theory? Presents a conceptual map? Is there a philosophy guiding the study? Are there key concepts being investigated?
Questions (5 points)
Are there explicit questions? Are they consistent with the framework, problem, and purpose?
METHODOLOGY
Research Design (5 points)
Is the design appropriate? Were mixed methods used? Was the researcher true to the design? Is it appropriate for the questions asked?
Sample and Setting (5 points)
What sampling method was used? Is it appropriate for the type of study?
Was the sample described? How were participants recruited? Was the size sufficient? Was data saturation described? What was the role of the researcher in the sampling process?
Data Collection and Analysis (25 points)
Is the process clearly described? Is it conducted in a consistent manner? Ethical? Any adverse events and were they managed well? What type of coding was used and was it consistent with the design methodology? Discuss rigor and threats to the qualitative process?
Descriptive Vividness
Did the researcher provide clarity, depth, and factual accuracy of the descriptions?
Did the report demonstrate authenticity, credibility, and trustworthiness of the data?
Was bracketing used by the researcher when analyzing the data?
Methodological Congruence
Did the researcher maintain rigor in documentation? Provide comprehensive presentation of all the study elements?
Were all elements of the study clear, concise, and accurate?
Did the researcher maintain procedural rigor such as use of reflexivity, in-depth field notes, and sufficient amounts of data, credible informants, and appropriately formulated questions.
Did the researcher maintain ethical rigor? Discuss ethical implications related to the study? Ensure rights of the participants were protected during the consent process? Did study results protect the identity of participants?
Was there a decision trail or auditability? Were methods to collect data made explicit? Was there adequate description of the data collection process?
Analytical Preciseness
Does interpretation correspond with findings? Are categories and themes logical? Can data be verified? Were there member checks?
Theoretical Connectedness
Are the theoretical schema developed from the study clearly expressed? Logical? Reflective of the data? Are concepts defined? Does the theoretical schema yield a meaningful picture of the phenomenon studied? Was a conceptual map derived from the data?
Heuristic Relevance
Can the reader recognize the phenomenon described in the study? Its theoretical significance? its applicability to nursing practice? Does the study contribute to theory development?
DISCUSSION
Interpretation (5 points)
Were limitations discussed? Was a theory produced? Do conclusions fit the results from data analysis? Were findings linked to the framework?
Implications (5 points)
Were implications for nursing practice, education, research or science addressed? Were suggestions made for future research?

Graduate level writing should be concise, clear, and organized. Content should flow from paragraph to paragraph using proper transitions. Correct use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation will assist in this process. All graduate papers must be written using the APA 6th edition.
