Nursing as Caring

According to Jean Watson in her Theory of Caring, the core of this theory is that human beings “cannot be treated as objects and that humans cannot be separated from self, other, nature, and the larger workforce” (Sitzman and Watson 2018). This theory encompasses the world of nursing while paying special attention to the interpersonal process between a care recipient and a care giver. Watson’s theory focuses on how key human caring is and how important the caring-to-caring relationship is and it’s potential to heal the person being cared for and the caregiver.Nursing as Caring Essay Paper

The science of caring is based on several factors of care. These factorscan be seen to apply in many, if not all, nursing care scenarios. The first factor is to embrace. This pertains to the altruistic values as well as the practice loving-kindness both for both self and others. While caring for my first COVID19 patient, this factor would be severely challenged. Showing love and care to a patient has, in the past, been associated with physical shows of the same. However, with the pandemic and the fact that all ICU staff had to wear the necessary PPEs, it is difficult to show this to a patient physically. Inspiration is the second factor of caring, according to Watson. This involves hope, faith, and honoring others (Savieto andLeão, 2016). This factor applies to nursing from the first day of practice. While working with patients, I found that it is important to inspire them as a positive mindset has positively affected outcomes. The same goes for inspiring family members. Trust is one of the more difficult factors to embrace. This involves nurturing individual believes, practices, and personal growth (Savieto andLeão, 2016). This becomes increasingly difficult, especially when caring for patients from ethnic and religious backgrounds that one does not understand well. I would encounter this when caring for a patient from a religion that does not allow blood transfusions. After attempting to get the patient’s family to consent for the much-needed transfusion, I would have no choice but to trust their beliefs.
