Conducting A Functional Assessment
The Specific Socioeconomic, Spiritual, Lifestyle, and Other Cultural Factors Associated with JC, an at-risk 86-year-old Asian male
The selected patient for this discussion is the 86-year old Asian Male who claims to depend on his daughter for his survival and care. The Asian data and information illustrate that he and his daughter are poor besides belonging to a minority ethnic group. Consequently, the socioeconomic disparity has adversely impacted his health and medical care (Shen, 2015). Therefore, the functional assessment must apply cultural assessment guide to ascertain the faith-based influences, cultural and health beliefs and practices, and special rituals, native language, dietary practices, and any sources of support that the Asian patient has.Functional Assessments and Cultural and Diversity Awareness in Health Assessment
Sensitive Issues during the Interaction
The first issue that I must remain sensitive with is the aspect of cultural competency during the communication process. I will ensure I avoid gazing at the patient firmly to avoid instances of being immodest and rude to the patient. I pay attention to the feeling and attitude of the patient and try to understand his beliefs, cultural practices, norms, and other tradition before subjecting him to any medication (Purnell, 2014). I will then ascertain whether the Asian patient can communicate in English given that he comes from a minority ethnic community.
I will also remain sensitive to the signs and symptoms presented by the patient especially those touching on medication and nutrition and medications as well. Noting the effect of the language barrier, I would. I would inquire about any stressors and the relevant support networks, literacy, or sense of life control to clearly understand the Asian patient (Holland, 2017). To understand the limitations of the patient in knowledge and cultural perspective, I will remain culturally humble. Functional Assessments and Cultural and Diversity Awareness in Health Assessment
