Health care is one of the most important aspects in life for all people, so it is crucial that health literacy be involved as well. Both health care professional and patients should be able to fully understand and be able to comprehend when it comes to their health. Many aspects come into play when it comes to health literacy for both sides, especially for professionals. Patients put their life into the hands of these health care professionals and trust them to ease them through the process. Health care professionals have a big responsibility in making sure the patients grasps what they are being told and going through in order to help their patients. As I was going through and taking the Health literacy lessons from the CDC, I learned interesting facts that I never really thought about before now. I work in the health care field and truly think that this course really opened my eyes when thinking about health literacy. One aspect that stood out to me was about how important communication is in health care. I did not realize how important it was for not only and physician to communicate to their patients, but as well as individuals and groups to communicate with their community.

Every single person needs to be involved and be able to understand when it comes to health care. Another fact I found to be really interesting and almost shocking even, was how small the percentage really is when it comes to adults skilled when it comes to health literacy. According to the CDC assessment I took, only 12% of adults are skilled in managing their health care and being able to prevent diseases. Preventative care is so important and so many people are not aware of this. Education and knowledge can honestly be life or death in some situations. Something that was discussed during this lesion was the use of technology when it comes to health care. A lot of patients who are elderly or do not have access to certain technologies have a disadvantage when it comes to new and innovated treatments. It is important in health literacy for the professionals to help all patients understand and teach them about maintenance for the future.  Sometime certain medical terminology is difficult for the average patient to grasp, especially when it comes to his or her own health. When someone is told news in regards to their healthcare, whether its good or bad, they often times have a hard time understanding hard medical terms. It’s so important for professionals to be sympathetic to this and use simple terms when discussing their health and treatments.

What I have recently learned with this lesson and course with help me out in my everyday life and job. Working in the health care field, sometimes you forget that not everyone is around certain situation as much as I am. It was a good lesion for me to step back and think about what they might be feeling. Being sensitive the lack of health literacy is important for professionals to understand and to help their patients really understand what is going on. It is also so important to teach and help patients learn to maintain their health. After learning how little of adults actually have a hard time when it comes to health literacy is a big eye opener, and as I go throughout my life I am going to always to sympathetic to that and try my best to help when I can.
